Richard Knowlton, president of Maine Water Co., announced Tuesday the company would maintain water service for customers who are furloughed federal employees until their paychecks start flowing again.

About Maine Water

The Maine Water Co. is a public water utility that owns 12 public water systems that collect, treat and distribute drinking water for homes, businesses and fire protection service. It serves more than 32,000 customers, or approximately 85,000 people, in 21 communities across Maine. The Biddeford Saco Division serves 16,500 customers, or approximately 48,000 people in Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Scarborough.

With the partial federal shutdown now in its 26th day — surpassing the 21-day shutdown of 1995–1996 to become the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history — Maine Water Co. announced Tuesday it would maintain water service for customers who are furloughed federal employees until their paychecks start flowing again.

"Water service is critical for families to be able to comfortably live in their homes, and we do not want these furloughed workers to feel their water service is at risk," Richard Knowlton, president of Maine Water Co., said in a news release. "We work with all customers who have hardships that affect their ability to pay their water bill, and this includes furloughed federal workers. Maine Water will waive interest fees on overdue balances and work with furloughed federal workers to maintain their water service until their paychecks resume."

Maine Water advised federal workers who are affected by the partial government shutdown and have a water bill due soon to call 1-800-287-1643 to advise the company of their situation.

Customer service specialists will work with them to ensure that their water service is continued and advise workers of any local assistance options, the company stated in its news release.
