Maine Medical Center's Medical Education Department will launch the state's only peer-reviewed medical journal dedicated to original research in the health sciences.

It's now seeking submissions from all professionals working in a clinical health care and medical education settings for the inaugural issue that's slated to be published next July.

Deadline for all article submissions for the first issue is Jan. 1, 2019. Submissions sought include the following topics:

  • Original research
  • Best practices in clinical medicine articles
  • Patient safety and quality improvement
  • Innovation highlights
  • Case reports
  • Reviews
  • Commentaries and invited editorials.

MMC stated in a news release that launching this new publication supports its academic mission by presenting original scholarly work, timely and emerging information and other important clinical knowledge that will benefit health care providers, their patients and the community.

"One of our primary goals in launching the Journal of Maine Medical Center is to help develop early-career health care colleagues as published researchers, an important aspect of professional growth," said Dr. Bob Bing-You, MMC vice president of medical education. "The professional development, identity formation and continuing education that are all part of becoming a published researcher will also elevate clinician engagement throughout the region."

Bing-You said the creation of this new platform for research will also heighten the focus on inter-professional education and patient care, as well as rural health care and the unique opportunities and challenges it presents.

Sharing knowledge through articles, he added, will magnify innovation within the regional health care system and strengthen regional workforce efforts through augmented professional connections.
