U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced Monday that Augusta-based Northeast Telehealth Resource Center will get a total of $325,000 in federal grants to enhance its ability to meet the health care needs of medically under-served rural areas.

Augusta-based Northeast Telehealth Resource Center will get a total of $325,000 in federal grants to enhance its ability to meet the health care needs of medically under-served rural areas.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, announced the grant award in a news release on Monday.

The center provides technical assistance, education and resources to local health care providers and medical professionals throughout Maine and New England.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded the grant through its Telehealth Resource Center Grant Program, after Collins and King advocated for the center with the HHS agency that oversees the grant program.

"Telehealth can serve as a critical lifeline for Maine people living in rural communities throughout our state," Collins and King said. "It connects people to medical professionals and health services, making health care more accessible and more convenient. We commend HRSA for this important investment in Northeast Telehealth Resource Center and in the health and well being of rural Mainers."

The Health Resources and Services Administration aims to improve health care by building healthy communities, strengthening the health care workforce and achieving health equity, according to the news release. The Telehealth Resource Center Grant Program supports the establishment and development of telehealth resource centers to help serve rural and medically under-served areas and populations.
