AVANGRID Inc., parent company of Central Maine Power Co., moved 140 employees to downtown Portland.

The company said employees from finance, internal office and other executive offices were relocated to One City Center.

AVANGRID (NYSE: AGR), which had been based at the Pineland Farms campus in New Gloucester, now, through mergers, has its corporate headquarters in Orange, Conn.

The company, with more than $31 billion in assets and operations in 27 U.S. states, was formed in December 2015 with the merger of Iberdrola USA and UIL Holdings Corp. It has 6,800 employees.

An estimated 250 people work for AVANGRID in Maine, spokeswoman Gail Rice said. In addition to the 140 at the new offices at One City Center, there are about 20 at Central Maine Power's facility at 162 Canco Road in Portland and another 90 at Central Maine Power's corporate offices at 83 Edison Drive in Augusta. It no longer occupies any space at Pineland Farms.

With the 900 people who work for Central Maine Power and Maine Natural Gas, AVANGRID and its subsidiaries have about 1,150 employees in Maine.

AVANGRID owns eight regulated utilities serving 3.2 million customers in New York and New England. In addition to Central Maine Power and Maine Natural Gas in Maine, the subsidiaries include New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas & Electric in New York; United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas in Connecticut; and Berkshire Gas in Massachusetts.

Through Avangrid Renewables, it operates more than 6 gigawatts of owned and controlled renewable generation capacity, primarily through wind and solar, in 22 states across the United States.

The move to One City Center "is part of a larger effort to align facilities and corporate functions to reduce costs and promote best practices," it said in a press release.

The company's goal is to be "best in class" in its industry by 2020.
