The New York Times reported Tuesday that Uber has been testing self-driving trucks carrying cargo for commercial freight customers on Arizona highways for the past few months. Although the big rigs have a licensed truck driver at the wheel ready to take over in case of an emergency, the Times reported that Uber is working toward an eventual goal of eliminating human drivers inside the cab for long highway hauls and relying on human drivers to handle shorter drives such as the final few miles to a customer's loading dock. According to the Times article, Uber believes the trucking industry is a natural target for automation, since in theory automated trucks can stay on the road longer than human drivers who over time become sleepy or distracted.
Do you agree with Uber that the future of long-haul trucking will be self-driving trucks?
